Quick Photo Fix with Picasa

I’ve taken thousands of pictures of jewelry. If you have perfect lighting (I never do), and a good camera that will take clear close-up shots, you can get a pretty good picture every time.

But what do you do if the light outside is *too* bright, and the light inside isn’t bright enough? This is a problem I face constantly in photographing my jewelry.

Luckily, using a few very easy steps, I can (mostly) fix my lighting problems using Picasa – in less than a minute!

Here’s an example of a photo I took, using my best possible indoor lighting, but late enough in the day that I didn’t have the benefit of some sunlight coming through the window.

Notice the blue background? That’s actually a piece of white felt. Easy fix: click the neutral color picker, under the “tuning” menu, then click anywhere on the blue background – tada! Light gray:

But remember, I said the background was actually white. The light was too dim, so even after fixing the blue cast, it looks dark. Easy fix #2: under “basic fixes” slide the “fill light” slider toward the right until the colors in the photo start to resemble the actual colors. Results:

Then if I want to fine-tune my photo more, I might use the sharpen feature, or play with the contrast and colors a bit, and I might even open it in Gimp if I need more control – but I nearly always take the few seconds in Picasa to fix the lighting, since it’s so easy and really works.

(As a side note – these earrings are available in my etsy shop)

A Little Etsy/Obama Humor

Whether you love or hate our president (or just think he’s okay), the dress in this blog post from the fug girls is a bit overkill. But make sure you scroll down to read their comment – etsy is getting mainstream if it’s mentioned on popular celebrity websites!

Tagging Tool for Etsy

Quick post for other etsy sellers – if you have a hard time coming up with good relevant tags, check out this tag tool from Craftweasel. It suggest tags that might be relevant to the terms you type in the search tool, and then gives you information about how many people search for them and how many other products are tagged with those terms.

Blogs to Read for Indie Business Tips

Are you an indie business owner, or someone considering starting your own art or craft business? Surfing the net recently, I found a couple of blogs with great information and tips for running and marketing a successful small business.

Piddix is the blog of the successful etsy seller with the same name. She sells primarily digital collage sheets in her etsy shop (how fun – she goes around finding cool imagery, scanning it, and creating collections of related images for use in things like scrabble tile pendants, mixed media art, etc) and has managed to quit her day job and support herself through her etsy shop. The insight on her blog about her experiences, as well as tips for increasing sales, are definitely worth reading.

Modish BizTips is one I may have mentioned before, but I haven’t read it recently – gotta add this one to my bookmarks so that whenever I have a few minutes, I can go read some tips. Lots of content from successful indie business owners. This blog is an offshoot of the very popular blog, Modish – so it was destined to be a success and a great resource. I love learning from people who are so good at what they do. Me? I’m great at making certain types of jewelry. Marketing it is a whole different ballgame, and there is a lot to be learned from the indie bloggers who are “household names” in the indie business community.

New Copper Jewelry

I am loving copper right now – maybe it’s the rich warm color, which is perfect for fall – so I’ve been remaking some of my favorite earrings in copper, and I’m also working on some new styles.

I’ll be adding them to my etsy shop over the next week, but here’s a preview of one I just finished:
